Game Side Action Plan

GAME SIDE ACTION PLAN

For Coaches and Managers How to Respond to Harassment, Discrimination, or Identity based harm Purpose: Protect player safety, dignity, and inclusion at all times.

1. If Player Eligibility Is Questioned

(For example: “Number 14 is massive, is he really only 14?”, “Number 4 looks like a boy — boys can’t play on a girl’s team.”)

Say:

“I guarantee our roster complies with BC Soccer and Canada Soccer guidelines. If you have concerns, please bring them to tournament organizers after the game.”

Do:

  • Stay calm and professional.
  • Do not discuss a child’s age, gender, or identity.
  • Redirect concerns to officials/organizers.
  • Playing in Albert: Non-residents may participate in the gender with which they identify.

2. If Discriminatory Comments Occur during play

By players, coaches or spectators:

Do not engage.

Immediately:

  • Inform the assistant referee of the situation that needs the referee’s attention
  • At the next stoppage, the referee should address the issue.
  • Do not resume play until the environment is safe. Report within 24 hours:
  • To the hosting association and request a follow up.
  • File an incident report to NSA (Collect witness names if possible.)

3. If Conflict Escalates

  • Remove the audience – Move discussion away from players and spectators.
  • Involve officials and tournament organizers.
  • Use calm, respectful language.
  • Focus on resolution — not debate.

4. If Safety Is Compromised

  • Prioritize physical and emotional safety- Stop the game if anyone feels unsafe
  • NSA teams only play when all eligible players are safe to participate.

5. After the Incident

  • Check in with the affected player and family.
  • Support formal follow-up by NSA staff/board.
